crickets...

lissag25 Aug 02, 2003 12:05 AM

ok forgive me but i haven't had a baby around the house for a couple of years now so i forgot how much they eat.. so i usually pick up a hundred crix, some supers, mealies, and (feeder fish for the wds) for all my adult lizards and that holds me over for a week or two.. well now with the baby who is eating 50 -100 a day i'm running low on the thousand i picked up last weekend.. to make a long story short where does everyone get their crickets that don't have a bad die off rate.. did someone say armstrong a few weeks back or is that my imagination ??? and how many crickets can i keep in a 20 gallon rubbermaid bin???

thanks in advance

Hi!

Right now we are getting our crix from wormman. The real key to keeping crikets alive is to give them a lot of hideys so they don't kill each other. Usually, when you buy a 1000 box they come with egg crates. Keep them and use them in your tub. You can also use toilet paper rolls (the old standby!)

Also, we have made screen tops for our cricket bins using 2x1 planks and window screen. This allows for more air flow and keeps the crix happy.

Cricket water is a must. Using veggies (potatoes, carrots, etc) gets really stinky really fast! Instead of buying commercial cricket food we go to our local Agway and get chicken "layer mash". It has tons of calcium and is very finely ground. The crickets love it and it's only about $8 for 50 lbs!!!

I hope I've been of some help!!

when you make the lid with the screen make sure it is not the fiberglass stuff. make sure it's the harder wire screen. the crickets will chew through the fiber glass stuff.
