raging ilness

the4thmonkey Jul 07, 2006 01:05 PM

Saige and Cadence are both ill and losing weight, and it looks very similar to what happened to Fawn. Otis seems fine and I have been keeping him outside most of them time, otherwise in his own little enclosure, which he hates. Saige is the worst off at the moment. Yesterday she had what looked like a little seizure and fell off the rock she was sitting on. They both have complete control over their muscles and can get around. But they sit with their heads up, as if trying to keep their airway open. Both are lethargic and Saige rarely opens her eyes. There is no popping or clicking noise when breathing, but sometimes they breathe hard. And sometimes they have stringy mucous in their mouths. We've been to the vet and he really does not know what to think. He is really afraid I will lose them all, and wants to autopsy if I lose another. They are getting antibiotic shots every few days. Also a little calcium syrup daily. And I decided I am not going to let them get any thinner, so they are also receiving a couple force feedings daily of either the dog food Élan recommended or nutri-cal. I am also giving them some pedialyte to keep them from becoming dehydrated. Saige has gone from 37 grams to 27 grams and she is gravid. Cadence has gone from 35 to 28 grams. Everything in their environment has been cleaned with bleach and again with a cleaner I found for turtle cages at the pet store and they have new sand. I just don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

Whenever they sit with their heads pointing towards the ceiling and breathing hard, along with stringy mucus your talking bacterial/resp infection, they need to be on an antibiotic, such as baytril asap or you are sure to lose them. Also not wanting to open the eyes goes along with it.

I'm so sorry to hear about all your lizards, but maybe you should call another Vet, or tell this one to look up resp infections in lizards. I hope they can be helped, they will go down quickly

Please keep us updated. I would not wait, they are in distress as far as breathing. Sorry they are so sick.

Sorry, I'm tired and was not real clear before. They are getting antibiotic shots at the vet. He agrees it is a respiratory thing but is afraid it might be viral because they are not responding. Fawn didn't respond, either. She got baytril and another antibiotic that I cannot remember the name of. She also got steroid injections towards the end when we didn't know what else to do. I really do trust this vet as he specializes in reptiles and has a special love of collared lizards, especially. He spends many weekends out photographing them in the wild and while he does not own any now, he has kept them over many years. He's buddies with Will Wells; they go herping together sometimes.

I have always given 1/100th of a cc of Baytril once daily by mouth.

Good luck.

élan

P.S. Dilute the Prescription a/d slightly with water to keep them hydrated, and tube feed a cc a couple times daily.

Sounds like a infection of some kind. Double check your temps in the basking zone 100-110f. Thats how they get sick most the time Temps too low.
