Well, since Tiger Salamanders are out...

How are Fire Salamanders? the things that drew my son to the Tiger was it's size. How large do Fire Salamanders get? I guess rather then worry about the "red tape" I will avoid anything that is endangered or "native" in NY.

large fire sals get about 6 inches, huge ones are rare but have been found up to 8 inches, though most in the pet trade seem to stay around 4-6 inches. you can still get some species of tigers, like barred and blotched which are the most common in the pet trade without having to worry about interference from the government, state or federal. i recently ordered two tigers from wild and wacky herps in texas (they have an add in the classifieds on kingsnake)that were listed as barred tigers, but have some beautiful colors and marking atypical of normal barred tigers. i8 was worned about mites from another person on kingsnake, though i had no such trouble with my two tigers.

I'm glad the tigers ya got were not infested with mites. My jordans are getting better. The mites are slowly going away. Since tigers live underground and below the level where mites live and breed, they tend to not get them. I've never found tigers, spotteds, marbleds and small-mouths with mites. Jordans being a woodland type salamander and living under debri where mites like to live and breed, mine got them. Anyway, best of luck to ya both.
