Odd feeding habits, anyelse,,,

HerpZillA Jul 07, 2006 05:15 PM

Odd feeding habits, anyelse have a snake like this.

Ok, I have a female bloodred corn. feeding is 50/50. I open the tub, pop in a mouse and she hits like like shes a 6' blood python. Or she freaks and might strike but wants nothing to do with it. So I take it out, then she seems like she is looking for it?

I usually try the next day and same mouse gets hammered.

Is it a female thing? lol

A bloodred thing?

Or is there some small thing I'm missing? She does seem to like it better if I get the mouse in the tub with as little disturbance as possible. But i've never seen a snake so on and off, and not long term. Some times as little as a few hours she will change?

Some snakes have quirks. I have a WC ball python (gift from hubby), who for six years has absolutely refused to eat a f/t rodent. About a month ago as I was handing out f/t meals in the herp room, she looked interested. Offered her one and BAM--she's been snarfing down small f/t rats weekly ever since. This is the same snake, mind you, who not only wanted live food, but none of it could be larger than a small mouse.

Then there's my sinaloan milk who only eats white rodents, and must be smooshing two of them against the side of the feeding box or he won't eat the third.

I also have an amel striped corn female who will lie on top of her hide box all day. Smells rats--slides into her (cereal box) hide. I dangle the food item in front of the opening, she pops her head out and drags it inside to eat.

Go figure. Perhaps your blood red "isn't in the mood" to hunt/eat at the moment you offer food. Or, is startled by the introduction of the food item. I assume you are feeding live. Perhaps if you placed the rodent in a small critter keeper atop the cage, the snake will anticipate eating. I have a calking who must "warm up" to the idea of food this way. If not, when I introduce the rat on tongs, she freaks and acts as if it's going to attack her. Their quirks keep it interesting, though. Best of luck!

I've seen snakes go off feed like 6-9 months, special colored rats or mice, A LOT as a work at a shop that sells 600 mice a week and maybe 400 rats. I get a lot of odd requests.

This bugger acts like the hognose I HAD. If you spook a hognose forget about it, they just won't eat, but he can crawl under some aspen come out the other side and he forgot about being spooked.

but this blood is just so high strung I guess? I just wonder if more people had corns like this gal.

Thanks

For what? I just said I've seen a lot of those feeding quirks, this was a new one to me.

I do not accept,, there was absolutely no need for one.

Maybe I should apologize if my reply came off wrong?

I've just never had a spazzie corn before. It does not seem to be in their general nature.
