Is this good or bad?

bearwest Jul 07, 2006 05:35 PM

My proven female amelanistic black rat came out of Brumation March 12,was very slow with post brumation shed,May 16.I introduced her to her maleon June 29 she shed again,I did not consider she could be gravid so soon,On july 4 she laid 7 small, but good looking eggs.
i felt her as she crawled through my fingers and felt no more eggs,I just assumed she was laying with stored sperm,
I went to feed her a few small fuzzies on the eve of the seventh and discovered she had at least 4 HUGE eggs in her,
any thoughts or clues?

On a happy note, the Lucy Black laiid 13 gorgeous eggs on the sixth

Thank in advance

Take her to a Vet. It sounds like she is egg bound. Let us know if the eggs that you have are good and produce young. The info I have says that American Rats can't store sperm that long.

On the morning of the tenth,we discovered she had laid two good looking LARGE eggs.I instructed the S.O. to take her to the vet anyway. Our first choice office is closed this week, the vet they reccomended is in Europe for a week. Not knowing any better my s.O. took her to a third vet, who's response was," Lets wait another week and see what happens"

the X-rays did confirm that the three distinct lumps we see are additional eggs.......Did we really need $90 worth of X-rays to see that ?

Wish me luck

Not all vets are created equal. Sorry to hear what happened. How is the little girl doing?

Absolutely miserable and letting everyone know it! It looks as if the eggs are still growing inside her,the two closest to the vent look tremendous,it also seems as if there is a fourth growing now.
She was less than cooperative when I put her in a warm soak

some years ago, when I had a young Texas rat eggbound,My two vet choices were taking a week off.Not sure if this is all sheer dumb luck .....or a conspiracy

Thanks for the concern

Keep us posted, and can you post a picture of the clutch. I for one would like to see the eggs and their sizes.

WOOHOO! AS OF 9:45 PM SHE seems to be finished.Nine days and 11 eggs later, she seems to be exhausted but in good health. The last 4 were larger around than she is,but look good,I almost expect them to pop out ready to eat mice.
I'll TRY to get a pic up,not real good with the photo tech
