parazap and snakes...

WEEBEASTIES Jul 07, 2006 07:01 PM

I have a corn about a year old thats been regurging every meal for the last couple a months. I've changed food sizes, live and dead, and increased heat changed cages and just about anything else I can think of...has anyone used parazap on corns for this and if so what was the result? I've used this on lizardswith similar issues with success but not on snakes. Any input?

I am wondering how long you waited in between offering food and how much you handle the snake? I have used NutriBac on regurgers and think it helps. But I am wondering if your snake just needs a few weeks without any food, but of course fresh water at all times is mandatory. I used Nutribac powder on pinkies and also ad it too water. Hope things work out for you Tom Stevens

I don't handle him at all since this started. I usually try feeding about every 10 days to two weeks. He has water available constantly. I will try the stuff you mentioned because he eats fine. I'm not sure where to find it but I'll look around for it. Thanks.

NutriBac is available at some of the online stores listed on this site. I order a lot from BeanFarm and have always been happy with them. It is not exactly a medication, but it is basically a powdered form of gut flora. So the reason behind using it is when a snake regurges it may lose some "good" bacteria from its stomach, the NutriBac supposedly replenishes it. I know guys who swear by it and I myself have seen results with it too. A bottle lasts a long time. I would hold off on feeding til you get some, may take a week or by mailorder. Then put some on a tiny pinky. If it holds it down repeat again in 10-14 days and keep adding it to the water. I have had snakes recover from a few weeks of treament with it and then go on to be good hardy feeders. Good luck Tom Stevens

kathy love (cornutopia.com) sells nutribac for $12 to your door.

Kathy Love has a long winded, but good description on handling regurg in corn snakes. I suggest you read it, monitor weight loss, and be patient. If weight loss is not pronounced, wait longer then you think is necessary (try 3 weeks) and then feed a smaller than normal prey item (try a hopper for an adult corn, fuzzy for a juvie). Continue with more patience and small meals... ect you've heard the rest of the story I'm sure. If the snake begins to look sick, or has lost more than 10% of it's weight, see the vet.

Good luck, the parazap and nutribac are only so so in my opinion and arn't on my recommended list.
