Herping in mexico

zach_whitman Jul 08, 2006 02:15 AM

Next week I will be traveling to mexico for the first time. I will be around Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco county. I was wondering if anyone here has ever done any herping in the area? I can't even find a good field guide for the area. I'm assuming that there may be some cool crotalus and maybe some kings/milks? Any one who could point me in the way of a good book, website, or can give me some info here would be sweet.
Cheers

Never done any herping down there, but I'd say, head into the jungles!!!

Oh yeah- and DEFINITELY bring your mosquito repellant! I was out there for work a couple years ago, and my boss took me golfing. With my body LATHERED in OFF, and still managed to get nailed over 120 times! (Yep- we actually counted later that night...) They got me through my socks, shoes, shirt, pants, etc!

It was BAAAAAAD!

Mexico is a COUNTRY. Jalisco is a STATE.
To answer your question, yes, there is a field guide for reptiles and amphibians of Jalisco. A. Garcia & G. Ceballos: FIELD GUIDE TO THE REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF THE JALISCO COAST. Should be available at specialty stores: Bibliomania, ZooBooks.

Have fun. Jalisco is great place to see herps in July. Remember, no collecting, unless you enjoy the calaboos.

The book is, of course, in Spanish
