enclosure wall question

Rouen Jul 08, 2006 07:55 AM

I'm digging a trench for my boxies new enclosure and need to know if 10 inches below the surface and 11 inches above is fine?

I am putting 15 inch cinder blocks in the trench and a 6" high wooden frame ontop of them.

I think it should be okay, but I have noticed that cinder blocks have a rough enough surface for turtles to climb pretty easily, so its REALLY important to have an overhang at the top of the barrier.

thanks Steph.
I have wood and screen for the top I just need to assemble it, it'll have latches at each corner so no buldozing out.

I know you are considering cinder block; however I'd recommend that you consider cement board. You can purchase Cement board that's reinforced with wire for strength. It's available in two thicknesses. I believe they are offered in sheets of 2 ft x 3ft. It's lighter to work with and has a smooth hard surface that once it is in place would be very difficult for a boxie to climb....except you'll need to do a little extra work at the corners where boxies seem to straddle the joining of two walls. It was made as a substitute for underlayment for tile floors. Check it out at your local DIY center.

the reason I am using cinder blocks is because I bought some about 2 yrs ago and they never got used, if I have an issue with them I can always dig them up, they are smaller blocks with only 2"x4" holes instead of the 4"x4" holes, I believe over all they are 4" x 7" x 15"
