eggs - how to maintain temperature

kellybee Jul 08, 2006 08:25 AM

Hi again, more questions!!! I have made myself a little incubator using a plastic tub and 3 inches of vermiculite ready for when the eggs are laid....

My question is, without a proper incubator how on earth do you prevent fluctuations in temperature? I live in England and even in summer the weather is often cooler. I dont want to leave the tub in the viv even though thats where the temps are most constant and appropriate, I have a big viv with rough green snakes but the temps in there drop to 75 at night. My heating is off in summer and as I only have a little apartment it gets quite draughty. I've looked all over the web and have not had much luck. I'm a bit worried that the temp might get a little too cold, even in the rough green viv.

Any suggestions?

Flucuations in temp are okay as long as the temps do not go below low 70's or higher than 90 (warmest part of the day) A good temp is in mid 80's maybe you could use a heating pad under your container???
But you would certainly need to know the temp of the inside to make sure eggs are not COOKED.

Lower temps in the 75ish low 80's will just take a bit longer to hatch. I would atleast TRY to get the temps at the 80's range.

Thanks again, I've got a square tupperware container, drilled 4 holes in the sides, put a few heavy stones in the bottom and half filled with vermiculite, I'm going to put it in with the rough greens, my other half said it's ok to increase their temperature to 85 in the day and drop to 80 at night! Hopefully all sorted. Thanks again, Kelly
