Chow time

r2r Jul 08, 2006 09:25 AM

Here's a couple of photos of dinner time at the pen.

They are eating their portion of what we had for dinner. Bell peppers, zucchini, snow peas, portabella mushrooms, broccoli, and some peaches and mixed berries.

All food is sprinkled with ground up cuttlebone and Nekton reptile vitamins.

I put the food platter in the center of the water bowl to keep the ants away. Seems to be working really well.

Another dinner of frozen veggies and mixed berries. The big one in the food is a female and the one I suspect as having laid the eggs. I have 5 females and three I think are too young and the other large female just isn't as active/antsy as this one.

I like the idea of the food platter surrounded by water to fool the ants...

Here's a link to a great website about nutritional needs of box turtles: I would suggest that you read it to get an idea of how to enhance your turtles' diet. It was a great help to me when I first got started.
You should be providing them with more protein and some calcium rich greens in addition to the fruits and veggies that you're giving them now.

Thanks for that link.

There are a ton of bugs in the pen area. I move the plates every other day and there are always tons of worms and slugs around it. I move it when the turtles are in the area so they can get to them.

I do offer up moistened dog chow every couple of days as well.

There are dandelions in the pen and I recently came across some hydroponically grown grasses (brought to me from some of my truckers that get it at the racetracks where it is sold for the horses). In fact, in some of the pictures I posted yesterday you can see some of it in the water bowl.

I couldn't give you a breakdown of what percentage of what is being eaten but I will work on increasing the protein. I do have beefheart in the freezer that I keep for my discus. I'll add some of that and see how they like it.

I wanted to dig out a spot for a bigger water bowl but I don't think I'll be digging in there anytime soon. That being said, I'll have to hold off on the feeder fish for awhile.

Again, thanks for that link. Great information.
