Meller's chameleons

PattySchildt Jul 08, 2006 07:46 PM

I recently saw a beautiful Mellers chameleon at my regular pet store. I don't know a whole lot about them. I have had a pair of Chinese water dragons for about 4 yrs, so I am familiar with lizards and their care. My question is, would the mellers chameleon and water dragons be compatible? I have a nice 7'high by 8' long by 3' deep wooden cage with lots of branches for climbing, silk flowers for decoration and hiding, and a misting system to keep the humidity high. They seem to have the same needs, but I'm just not sure if they would be compatible. Any info would be appreciated.

Chameleons need to be kept alone (one per cage) in most cases...and Meller's are one of the more difficult chameleons to keep alive let alone thriving in captivity.

I also don't recommend keeping different species together generally.

No, Meller's prefer their own turf. That cage sounds good for either water dragons OR melleri, but both would cause problems. Melleri have been known to savage animals of other species, if they don't just eat them outright. Water dragons have displays that may also cause the Meller's stress or injury (tail whipping).

On second thought, the cage is not ideal. Some melleri eat the foliage in their enclosures, so the silk plants are not a good idea. Also, don't water dragons need a soaking/fishing pond with a filtration system? I only ask because I knew a WD breeder, and he kept two separate filtered pools going for his colony.

Thansk, all of you, for the response to my question. I didn't think they should be put together, but I was hoping they could. This Meller chameleon is so beautiful, I'd love to have him. But not at this time, I guess. My water dragons have an ideal setup, actually they have a whole room to themselves. Anyways, thanks again, everyone
