Broccoli Rabe OK for Beardies?

littlediva Jul 08, 2006 09:48 PM

I have some Broccoli Rabe and I was wondering if it is OK for a beardie. If you don't know this veggie, it's a more primitive form of broccoli - almost all leaf and hardly any flower. Very similar to chinese broccoli, but with less stem. It's a dark bitter green with lots of calcium, vitamin A and C. The terrific list on www.beautifuldragons.com has broccoli as a "feed rarely" item, but there is no mention of broccoli rabe (also called broccoli rape). I was intending on feeding it to her raw (very bitter for humans - usually cooked twice)

Anyone know more about this veggie and whether it is ok for beardies?

Thanks. Cynthia.

It's fine to feed. But every plant has it's pros and cons. Rape when over done can potentially cause liver related problems. Just like some plants when over fed can cause gout or how spinach when over done can wind up leeching calcium from the body, etc.... The key is to just remember to feed in moderation. Too much of a good thing can be just as bad for an animals health as too much of a bad thing.
