Retained sperm??

Bill_Bartkus Jul 09, 2006 10:12 AM

Has anyone heard of this in Dumeril's?

I alternate my breeder females to give them a season off to recover and fatten up. The female I used last season, which I didn't pair up this year, stopped feeding last December at the same time as the female I bred this season, and acted as if she was gravid also. Anyway, last week, she shed and dropped a few slugs and one fully formed, dead neonate! How can this be? I'm pretty sure I've heard of other reptiles having the ability of "retaining sperm", but not in boids.

actually i have heard of this. it isnt a frequent thing but ive heard of it. if i recall correctly, they can store sperm for up to a year. while this may be exaggerated or whatnot, thats what ive heard. there are lots of things we still dont know about snakes.
