about carpet pythons

mcwoods Jul 09, 2006 01:32 PM

hey guys,
I have never owned a snake before, but i am going to buy one soon. Can you guys tell me some things about the different types of carpet pythons? I want something that is managable for a college student in terms of size and price. also, where is the best place to buy a snake from? im guessing it would be better to buy from a breeder on the classifieds than to buy from a big pet store, right?

thanks,
Mike

Carpets are great pet snakes. The main differences revolve around pattern, color, and size and temperament to a lesser extent. I would definately recomend buying from a breeder (and remember- not everyone claiming to be a "breeder" on the classifieds is in fact a breeder)as opposed to buying from a petstore.
Go look around for some other forums and references and you will find lots of info. Specifically look for the terms Morelia and Pythons.
In a nutshell-

Jungles (which are the best by far-lol)- One of the smallest forms, beautiful gold and black to cream and brown. A highly arboreal form, and somewhat more nervous than others.

Irian Jaya / West Papuas- like somwhat mellower (in color and temperament) versions of Jungles. Lean towards browns/yellows/lavendars color wise. Small like Jungles.

Coastals- The largest subspecies of carpet. Very mellow temperament, while most are browns and cream colors, some approach Jungle like yellows.

Just do your homework and you will do fine.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions!
