My first thought is that it's a juvenile Coluber jugularis, the Balkan whipsnake.

I was originally thinking along the same lines...but does jugularis have a known distribution in Afghanistan?
My guess is juvenile coluber rhodorachis (Cliff racer, Jan's Desert racer, Sand Racer). It's native to Afghanistan and juveniles are spotted. Just a guess.

You may well be right. The one reference I have described the range for jugularis as extremely large & I thought Afghanistan was included, but it was not specifically mentioned. I may have misread it. It most certainly is a species of Coluber.

I was unable to open the page, but after some looking it up on some other sites, I believe that you may be right! Thanks for your help,
