Gecko SAFE sealant?

Priest Jul 10, 2006 02:39 AM

Here is my problem. I have several nice pieces of wood in my leopard gecko cage right now and they all love to limb on/under them. My only issue is that when I put crickets into the tank, most find there way into some deep and thin holes in the log, making it almost impossible for the leos to eat them. I was wondering if I could use a non-toxic silicone sealant to fill most of the holes, let it sit outside of the tank for a few days/week (just to be safe) and not have to worry about health problems. I know there is some on the corners of the cage (and on a platform I have in the cage to give the geckos an extra sq. foot of room) but I just wanna be on the safe side.

There is aquarium sealant but I don't think it is the answer. Crickets will eat anything they climb on. Including each other. If they eat the caulk and the geckos eat them it could be a problem. I would say you should pull the wood out during feeding. Then take out any remainding crickets before returning the wood. I don't leave crickets in with the geckos because they can bite the gecko and give them an infection. As unlikely as this may be I don't risk it.

Ya, that's what I'm doing now, it's just been a pain... I'll keep pulling it out then, thanks
