Hello All, new to this forum

We are just getting our feet wet with Uros and wanted to introduce ourselves. We just got our first Uros about a week ago. Well, we kept Egyptians many years ago, but haven't had a Uro in our house for more than a decade. So our first Uros in a long time, anyway. We now have a pair of Somali (U.mcfadyeni) and a trio of Algerians (U. acanthurus) and possibly a small group of Ornates coming soon. What we need is a good reference point for information. I can't find any complete literature on the subject of keeping, breeding, and localities. Does anyone have any book titles, websites, or magazine articles they can offer? One big question we have is at what age can sex be determined reliably and by what methods?

Thanks!

I found it on Amazon.com printed in English. Looks like a good book, nicely done.

Those are some beautiful lizards!! Congrats and welcome back to uros. I didn't want to leave your question about sexing unanswered, though I'm not going to be very helpful. My ornate pair began to show their adult color differenced about a year and a half or so. Or rather, the male began to get blues and greens and the female did not. I don't have any experience with either of the other species - perhaps you would be best off contacting one of the major breeders (or whoever you got them from), as your average Joe won't have enough experience to help.

Torey, just for the sake of debate, are you SURE this is a male, based just on coloration?
Can there not be some colorful females in the species? Where does one draw the line on sexing if it's based mostly on color or pattern?
I bring this up only because we have a definite female who sports blue & green & could easily be mistaken for a drab male. Do you suppose the key is whether or not the bright colors dominate not just the head & extremities but mainly the BACK?

>>Torey, just for the sake of debate, are you SURE this is a male, based just on coloration?

Do you mean am I sure Scuttlebutt is male based on his coloration? No, I'm sure he's male because Doug Dix told me so.

If you mean a more non-specific male, color would just be a first clue. I don't have much experience with ornates and can only give the observations I have from my pair. Are there male mimic females in all uro species? I don't know - I've only ever heard it specifically mentioned about malis. I'm sure there are much more reliable techniques for sexing ornates (bulges or wax secretions or pores maybe), but I've never had to do that, so I can't really comment.

Thanks for that! I STILL don't feel comfortable sexing ornates unless they're completely mature. Something about not feeling confidant with the "bulge". Anywho, I wasn't second guessing you. Just trying to gain a bit more confidence in sexing sub-adults.
