Guesses on these babies sex?

rjward97 Jul 10, 2006 04:07 PM

LOL I thought it would be easier to tell which is which with my first western hog clutch, but they may very well all be the same.. and that would explain why I am not seeing much difference. It wouldn't really matter, but I have a friend who wants a pair and another who wants a lone female to eventually breed to his male.. so kinda need to know.

Any guesses on what I have?.. Took a ton of pics.. but only a few are good enough to post. Little things don't like to sit still for long! Here are pics of 3 of the 4, the other one just ate so not messing with him/her for a few days.

Really? Thanks Frank, I had planned to pick up a probe set at the IRBA show this weekend and have a reliable breeder instruct me on how to use it. Maybe after a few more clutches it will be easier to tell by tail length alone.

The odds of me being correct are very slim, especialy from a photo posted in the fashion it was. It was a "guess" based on what I think I can see from my side. I probe all snakes to ascertain their sex, but it fun to "guess". Guesses have only a 50% chance of being accurate per snake. Probing brings those percentages up quite a bit if you know what your doing

Thanks Frank. I know, with something like hogs, a pic can only have 'guesses'. I am going to go ahead and get the probes, and have someone show me how to properly use them.

I am gonna need them next year anyhow, for my chihuahua mountain king babies. Might as well get some practice in now.
Thanks again to all who posted

Just by looking, I'd say all males. But it's not always easy just by looking. The females tails are cosiderably shorter and taper down quicker...

I don't see anything that looks like a female. Not definite, but they all appear male to me.

Hey, Roxanne. Bummer if they're all male. The clutch I got my W. Hog from was a clutch of 6 all male. Wonder if that happens alot w/ hog clutches. How many in the clutch yours are from again? Oh, yeah, what day are you going to the IRBA show. Can't decide whether to go Saturday or Sunday.

hey Darren
Was a total of 10 eggs. 5 duds right off the bat, and of the remaining 5 only 4 turned out to be fertile. Liam has a basketball game saturday afternoon.. so we will be going on Sunday. Not sure what time yet, trying to work out something to possible meet up with someone to get a trio of tokays.. but had no response yet, and kinda need to know if I need to get there early to get through the show before meeting him outfront, since no non-show herps are allowed in... most likely noonish though.

Sorry that I won't be able to get you a girl this year... Guess I won't be sending Mel a pair either buuut if you are set on getting a female hog this year.. check out the ones thet Renegadde Reptiles will have there! You are bringing some right Rick?
