15gal Tank construction

kyle1745 Aug 02, 2003 09:24 AM

I am working on a 15gal tank for my future imitators, here is a link to my progress so far if anyone is interested. I have also posted a pic of the cheap under the cabinet light I picked up.

Not sure yet, I have a couple of pieces of drift wood that I might use, the one I like is a little to big. I might build a rock waterfall type thing in a corner if I can find some nice rocks to use. I hope to get the gravel and the rest of the cracks done today if I get time.

Ok after todays work:

Waterfall down the left side of the cork, the drift wood just took up too much space for such a small tank.

Also filled all the cracks with dried moss and covered the rest of the foam with dried moss and silicone.

So far I like the look, but it needs some plants. Any ideas other than the one I have?

I plan to put this on the right side, just not sure what else. Broms are a pain, but imitators love em... I might add a shelf on one side.

If it were me I would not use the Syngonium Podophyllum ( Arrowhead Plant ). I would use the Ficus Pumila ( Creeping Fig ). It will crawl up the cork background and start to cover it. Looks really good after awhile. I would use bromiliads in the tank if I were you. Most thumb nails like them and they give them a place to hide. As for the lighting, I would look into getting some T5 lighting systems. They are not that expensive and they give off more light than that under cabinet light you have.

I plan to do almost what you said. I am using the plant I bought on the right side, then I plan to get something that will climb the bark in the back, and then maybe an aqatic plant on the left by the water. With a little moss. I like the plant pictured because it will offer them a place to jump on. I am also trying to add a shelf on the right side.

Do you have any links to the T5 lighting? The cabinet light will work fine, but I am always open to ideas. I did buy a 5000k bulb for it.

Hi,
I have had bromiliads in my imitators tank for about7 months and they use them alot. I have a tad in one they are feeding I think you would like them in the tank.I have a neo.olens that they usually use when they deposit their tads but also have a film canister that they have never use. the neo.fireballs are good ones also.I do have a big brom I bought back in may of 2002 that has been alive since then and I have cut 4 pups off of it without any problems.
