surprise clutch...need help!

polarpooch1 Jul 11, 2006 09:06 AM

Help! Help! A fox snake that hitch hiked home w/my boyfriend from camping has just laid a clutch of about 9 eggs (from what I can count).

What do I do?! It literally just happened. She had not laid the eggs when I woke up, so it just happened in the last hour or two.

I have never had a clutch of snake eggs, and have no idea what to do now. This snake was an accident! I only put it in a cage to keep it till my boyfriend returned to the U.P. in Mich (next weekend!). to return it where it orgininated. Now I need help!

Do I need to put the eggs someplace different? Do I need to remove them from the cage? Any kind of humidity/heat requirements? How long do they take to hatch? What temp do they need to develop?

Jeez, I only keep snakes as pets. I did not expect this. It's very cool...but I want to make sure I don't kill the eggs.

The Fox Snake is a protected species in Michigan.

polarpooch1 Jul 11, 2006 11:29 AM

Had you looked it up, you would have found that the U.P. fox snake is the WESTERN species, not the threatened EASTERN species of the S.P.

Anyone have any suggestions about these EGGS, and not revisiting the discussion (posted weeks ago on this forum) on Western v. Eastern fox snakes in Michigan?

You are correct. I did look it up. I found a check list on the internet that only listed the Eastern Fox as being in Michigan. After your post I looked further and saw the Western Fox snake as also being in the state. The initial check list I saw must have only referred to the lower part of the state.

You have my apologies and please keep us posted on your clutch.

Polarpooch... check out this link:

http://coloherp.org/cb-news/archive/careshts/ratsnake.php

It's about ratsnakes mainly, but the bottom of the page mentions that the same incubation techniques can be applied to fox snakes, too... I didn't read over the page thoroughly, but you may need an incubator... you can get a Hovabator here for a great price:

http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/reptile-supplies/reptile-incubators/

Hope this helps! Good luck with the eggs!

THANK YOU. I'm bookmarking that link, it looks like it has loads of great info!

Also, THANKS to Jeff S. for emailing me personally about this.

My eggs are now sitting in Pearlite, in a plastic box, with appropriate humidity levels and temperature. I'm told in 60 or 70 days I should see hatching.

I'm much less panicked now Such good people on Kingsnake.com!!!!

Awesome!!! I'm so glad that things are working out so nicely!

Make sure to post pics of the babies when they hatch!

(BTW - nice animals in your sig! Sounds like we have the same tastes. I also have a Brazilian rainbow boa and I'm purchasing a chondro (or two...LOL) later next month. And my hubby and I have already decided that when we get a dog, it will be a Sibe. )

Oooo, you're going to have some beautiful animals!!! I'm getting way ahead of myself, but if these eggs turn out OK, I may consider getting a male BRB for my female That's a long way off, though. I've been reading about breeding...and it sounds much more challenging than hatching!

Chondros are awesome snakes...but one of mine is super vicious--gorgeous, but mean as hell! She's a biak-type. The sarong-type is much mellower, and quite tame.

Good for you for getting a Siberian!! ARe you looking at rescues, or a breeder? If you don't know much about huskies, I recommend "Siberian Huskies for Dummies" . If you already know about them, then just HAVE FUN WITH YOUR NEW CRAZY PUPPY! I've had Siberians for so many years now, I'm totally hooked on the breed.

Polarpooch,

That would be so awesome to breed BRB's! Rainbows are such beautiful animals. I'm sure they would be an absolute joy to breed.

I'm just starting to become interested in breeding, too. I'm hoping to breed chondros within a couple of years... just getting my feet wet for now by trying to acquire a yearling/subadult pair, and reading all that I can. I've already made arrangements to purchase a male... he is a beauty produced by Rich Culver - a totally kitten-tame two year old Biak outcross. I've actually been researching chondros ever since I first started in the herp community. They've been my favorite since I was a kid!

Regarding dogs... aren't the Northern breeds just the best!? I'm the type to research stuff pretty obsessively... so I've read tons about Sibes and subscribed to a bunch of the Siberian mailing lists. It'll be several years before hubby and I get our own dog, though! Too many cats right now... not willing to mix a Sibe with a hyper prey-drive with 5 naive cats!

Annnyhow, please make sure to keep us updated on the eggs as they develop and begin to hatch! This all sounds like a very cool little adventure for you. I wish I had some eggs to hatch now, too!

And by the way, here's a pic of my first new chondro, who will be coming to live with me in a month or two (I don't think Rich will mind if I post it here). I'm so excited!

HOLY CHONDROS!! What a beautiful snake! My chondros pics are in my photo album if you want to go look. I added one pic of "Precious" (the vicious one!) from a while ago. Which reminds me, I have to add some new pics of her!

Hope you didn't mind my suggestion about the husky book. You sound like you know what's what with these dogs. I just always recommend it to anyone I hear is getting a Siberian. (I'm one of those annoying Siberian-zealot-crusader types--and sometimes it shows )

Good luck w/your new snake. I so wish I could get another one...maybe someday!

Wow, your Precious is so beautiful! I love the yellow on her. Is she a Biak type? I looked for your Photo Gallery but I couldn't find it. Can you give me a link?

No problem on the book suggestion! I totally understand and it's great that you're proactive in spreading the word about these dogs.

I think you can find it here: http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.php?user=58887&cat=500

You can see my little Clarice, my most recent Siberian there, too...

Post pics when you get your awesome snake!

Polarpooch,

Kiwi is just beautiful! I love the blue on her... I'm very partial to the Sorong types. And I *adore* her name... mind if I steal it someday for one of my chondros!?

Clarice is a beautiful girl! She looks so healthy and happy. And the setup you have for your GTPS is just stunning. I'm a big fan of naturalistic enclosures.
