Wife lookin' to get into Beardeds..need some info......more

East TN Reptile Aug 02, 2003 10:15 AM

I've worked with & breed reptiles for over 14 yrs & I don't know squat about BD's. The wife is looking for something small, docile & fairly easy to breed. Would 1.1 Bearededs be the answer?
I will not buy an animal without checking & getting info first. Any info would be great and names of very leliable breeders. If they are hardy, docile...ect. I need some names of good reputiple breeders. She onlt wants 1.1 normals to start out with, nothing fancy. How do you rate......
Difficulty breeding?
docile?
hardyness?
how long do they live?
problems?
Thanks in advance for ANY info. BTW. You all sure got some KILLER Dragons on this forum! Alot of the color morphs.I've never seen or even heard of ! I'd LOVE to see picks of the different colors! Anyone recommend a good web page for us window shoppers? Dave @ East TN Reptiles

WWW.dachiu.com has a lot of pics and really good prices. You could get a few colored dragons for the same as normals. Well, you will always be able to find cheaper normals but really not by much after shipping. I know that dragons are very docile creatures. I have 8 and never got a nip. They are hardy animals with extremely hardy appetites. As babies and juveniles they can eat 25 crickets a feeding 2-3 times a day plus greens. Breeding comes pretty easy to them males can't be kept together with females cause they are almost constantly looking to breed. So you will need two setups for a pair. A 3x2x2 will be sufficient for 1 dragon. Also they can't be breed before a year old, and it's recommended to wait 18 months of course you could breed yearly, but that could shorten the life span of the female. The largest one I have is 22 inches and 720 grams. He is the biggest I've ever seen but German giants have been known to get as big as 24 inches. They need supplements on food calcium d3, and multivitamins 1 a week. Uvb light is recommended fluorescent or mercury vapors. Basking spot of 105 and a cool end around 80. I've found them to be the best reptile yet, and gave up a few species to concentrate only on them. I have pics below of some morph crosses hit Mystical Dragons below, and any questions you have would most likely be answered on the Dachiu site. Good breeders. WWW.jerseydragons.com, www.dragonsbynature.com, www.dachiu.com. They have good care sheets on those pages also.

I have a question about the cage size. You said it should be atleast 3x2x2. This translates into 36"x24"x24". I have the standard tank sizes right here and I can't find one that even comes close to those dimentions. They are all that long, but the depth is not even close to two feet, more like a foot or 16 inches. If you were to get a tank which size would you get? Thanks

For glass I believe the 40 breeder tank is what is the smallest recommended think thats the 36X18. The 3x2x2 is a custom melemine tank. Thats what I keep singles in now. The more room the better for them so when I was using glass I would get the 18 inch wide ones.

I think mattman answered most of the pertinent questions. Just wanted to stress again that they are wonderful animals, easy to handle and simple to breed. If you live in Daytona you may just want to wait for a reptile show as I believe there are many down there. Here are a few red/orange morph dragons I own.

They are GREAT! I got my hubby into BDs about 4 years ago. Our first breeding happened without us really trying. We were niave, we just said "Hmm... I wonder what will happen if we put them on the rug together, will they fight?" NOPE! They did something, but it wasn't fighting!! Before we knew it we were breeding BDs! We now have 9 breeding adults, 4 sub-adults and hundreds of babies!

If I were you I'd start out with 2 normal BDs. They are easier to sell to local pet stores and distributors. Once you get into morphs, if you really want to get your money's worth, you need to sell them online, individually, or at shows.

Each female can produce up to 40 eggs a clutch. Most of our females have at least 3 clutches a year. You have no control over how many clutches she will lay, they only need to breed once. They store will the sperm. Although, it is better to let them breed more than once over the season, you'll have a better chance of getting more viable eggs that way. We have a 98% hatch rate and use an incubator we built ourselves out of a large cooler. If you want to know how let me know.

As for temperment: Alot of babies and juveniles have little attitude problems. The threaten, etc. They get over it. They need to be handled and spoiled a little. We have one male (a bright orange morph) who is HUGE, over a year old and still has a major attitude. All of our others are fine. When we first got into BDs we would be afraid of the little ones trying to bite us, now we laugh at them and pick them up anyway. They normally have GREAT temperments.

If you are looking for good babies there are tons of places to look. If you are anywhere near Mass or NH we will be selling at the next NH show. We have 5 "hold-backs" who are sexable. Their parents were really pretty (Angus and Athena - if you look on our site). We'll be keeping one or 2, but the others are available. We also have some other babies (unrelated) who are very well started 10 week olds, but they aren't sexable yet. Like I said, if you'll be at the NH show let us know and we'll hold some good ones for you. (We also ship, if you're interested).

Otherwise, I highly recommend breeding BDs. Its fun, easy and addictive!

Good luck!!
Kelly
