Eggs aren't hatching.

matt2107 Jul 11, 2006 02:13 PM

I've got a clutch of 24 eggs that started hatching on Friday.
19 have hatched so far.
One split its egg but then decided not to come out and has consequently died.

I have 3 that are still yet to split. One of them is huge... looks incredibly bloated.

Should I just wait or is there anything else I can do?

Cheers

Matt

You can make a small cut in the eggs....I recomend nail clippers and just use the corner....Good Luck...

I usually will open the egg when I see a slit - or if 3 days pass and some are not out, I'll pip it myself, to check on the animal.
It's fairly common that babies that go back in will drown, so I just cut them open enough for some of the unnecessary fluid to leak out.
I've never cut a snake (knock on wood) yet, and I've done it a bunch of times.

...and I think to myself, "What a wonderful world."

I think that everyone does things differently. What I have done this year is, if there are eggs that have not pipped, I wait two days(after the first one pipped), then make a little cut, so the snake can get out. Some people are against helping the weaker hatchlings, but I think we should help out anyway we can. I also had one egg that was bloated. It was a king snake egg. It never pipped. I had made an incision after the other eggs had pipped. The snake inside was fully formed, but dead. Not sure if the egg absobed too much water or what. Hope this helps
