Crickets vs. Mealworms

wink0083 Jul 11, 2006 02:32 PM

So my wife has been bugging me that she wants a bearded for about 7 years now and I'm finally almost ready to cave. A question though, every care sheet I have found says that beardeds eat mainly greens and crickets and discuss the importance of cricket sizes. Are mealworms inappropriate for beardeds? I have a group of leopard geckos that I breed so I have a constant supply of mealworms available and only occasionally purchase crickets to spice things up because in my opinion crickets just plain smell bad and I keep all of my reptiles in my living room...

Any thoughts?

The mealworm skin can plug up your Dragon, it's ok once and a while, but it's not a good staple food(IMO)

mealworms can be dangerous with young bearded dragons. Their high chitin to 'meat' ratio can lead to impaction in bearded dragons. Though crickets are a good staple insect for bearded dragons, they are not the only insects available now to feed bearded dragons. They can do well on silkworms (small to medium sized for young dragons), butterworms, small hornworms, various species of roaches and other feeder insects.
