corn snake deformity

NCStateHerps Jul 11, 2006 04:18 PM

noticed one of my corns was attempting to come out of his egg this morning...i thought nothing of it and went to work...I came back for lunch, and he was in the same position, so I figured something was up...I carefully snipped away his eggshell, realizing he couldnt get out of his egg...i noticed the kinks on his upper spine, and this is what was revealed after i got him out of the egg:

basically besides a couple of severe spine kinks, the last fourth of the body is fused together...

thought i'd share this, and see if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing with the snake actually hatching out and being this deformed?

Well, I wouldn't call it 'hatching out', as if you hadn't cut the egg open for him, he'd have remained in there until he died. But yes, and with snakes that badly kinked, euthanasia is really the only viable option. If you have a kingsnake, feed him off. If not, a quick trip to the fridge and then freezer will give the snake a peaceful send off.

just wondering how many days in the egg and what incububation temps.thanks.

NCStateherps Jul 12, 2006 07:37 AM

incubated in a little giant incubator, 82 degree consistency...eggs began hatching at 60 days...

i have noticed some slight kinks in 1 other hatchling, and 1 that has more prominant kinks besides the seriously deformed corn...

the more severe individuals im going to feed off to my kingsnakes...

Have to agree with Kat really. A pretty good illustration of why cutting eggs isn't always a good idea.

I had two kinked babies this year. One was so bad that I had to put it down, the other died about two weeks later. I do not know why they kinked as my temps did not flux and were not over 84 or 85.

Had that problem last year. I use a rubbermaid tub with aquarium heater. I kept the container closed with only a small hole for the heater cord. The humitidy in that container is extreme. This year I kept the lid cracked so the container wouldn't be so humid. So far I have not had the kinking problem this year!
