escaped hatchling corn- any ideas?

rapunzel Jul 11, 2006 04:45 PM

My daughter INSISTED on this tiny corn snake from the reptile show on Saturday- I tried to talk her into a larger one, and I even suggested a king- but she fell head over heels for this nightcrawler sized corn. Well, sometime today it escaped. Apparently it got out where the glass half of her tank top meets the screen (plastic hinge)..there are literally a million places it could be. I looked under that tank stand, in all the obvious places- like under the dresser, under the pile of clothes in the corner of her room- I even looked in her pet rats cage.

Any suggestions on how to make them come OUT of hiding- and/or any tips on how to keep the cat from catching it first?

I personally have not had much luck with excapees in my house, but its a log home, and I have 2 cats

Try 2 litre pop bottles. Add a little water and set them around on their sides. You can also prop 1 end up 1/4" to get the water to one end.

Or cut the top of the 2 liter bottle off, reverse it so it is a funnel. Add a tiny bit of water, and prop up the front end so the water does not drain out. This method makes it tougher for the snake to get out.

On larger snakes most people use milk jugs with 1/2" of water.

Good luck.

amazing- my girls were in bed and heard a noise, turned on the light, and there was the snake! It was in the bedroom window ledge. I have no idea how it got up that high for as small as it is. So, my daughter is estatic, the lid has been taped down, and snake is safe and sound.

You might want to be careful about using tape. If the snake can get to the sticky side (he reached that spot once) he will try and push his way through it. Not so bad, but if you have sticky tape he will get caught in it. I had a small corn get stuck in tape once and pulling him out opened his side. He lived through it but it was scary.

Rubbing alcohol and polish remover will eat away at the glue on tape, but i'm sure neither of the stuff is good for the snake. Why not get one of those plasic carrier cage things they have at wal-mart. Like $4 bucks and no small holes for escaping. Also light weight and makes cleaning very easy, and if your snakes as small as you said it is, it'll do fine in it for a while. Had one of mine in there (till it got a rubbermaid cage). Here's a pic of the snake I had in the pet carrier cage.

Dont give up hope... one of my customers lost their corn and found it 4 months later looking better than ever.
