You said that your snakes came out darker than they really are, thus is beacuse you have them on a white background. The camera tries to balance colors somehow and thus the snakes on white backgroungs always look dark. Try photos on a darker background, or get close enough that the snake takes up most of the frame.

They are nice looking snakes either way, but it is goo to capture the snakes REAL colors. I also like outdoors photos in real sunlight, But sometimes the sun is too bright and you have the same problem as with the white background. I have also found that outside with dappled sunlight AND the flash makes for good shots. The sunlight gives the sheen and the flash dulls the shadows.....
Just as in real life, the snakes will look different under different light conditions and between day and night.

Best photo advice....TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS and select the best ones.
