Edible or not

matt_fl Jul 11, 2006 07:49 PM

Do any of you know a good source on what plants and the parts of them are edible (u)for iguanas(/u)?
For instence, I am aware that rose petals are edible, but I don't know about rose leaves and I won't use my rhino iggy as a guinea pig. I like to grow a variety of edible plants (roses, hibiscus, impatiens...) so that I always have a good source of food for my iggys.
Thanx

Dude, no offense, but 4 replies down there's "Toxic/Non-Toxic" plants. That oughta do it.

That post just says not to put inedible plants in an igg enclosure... doesn't help much, does it?

Actually, if you follow the link through, it does provide reputable websites, such as Melissa Kaplan's http://www.anapsid.org/resources/edible.html

I said I already saw the post. That includes the link. I was asking for more info because I wanted more info, not to be referred back to that post. Sheesh, if you can provide an answer, then why reply?

We both tried to help you. Try going to a search engine if you can't find what you're looking for here. Maybe read a book.

matt_fl Jul 13, 2006 04:06 PM

Oh my gosh. You aren't helping because I've already seen that info. On the other hand, if you could tell me a specific book to read, that would actually be helpfull. Telling me to go read a book is BS. I have as much right to inquire about the care of iguanas on this site as you do. If all you are going to do is tell me you don't know or to look elsewhere or some other useless crap, then please, feel free not to reply.

Aren't we a little p!ssy uh?

For near-complete, free, iguana care-info, check out Melissa Kaplan's Iguana Care website. Google it.

Her book, Iguana for Dummies, is very good. It's part of the "Dummies" series.

My personal favorite is James Hatfield's Ultimate Iguana Manual, I believe someone said a new edition is out. It's a bit more expensive than Kaplan's, but worth it. It has great plans for enclosure-building too.

I take it you live in Florida? So do I, and it's perfect for out-door enclosures nearly all-year long.

The link Adelia provided leads to numerous links, PLENTY of information if you ask me. We're not almighty know-it-alls, we provide what we know, so it's up to you to take it from there, sparing us the attitude. If all those links are still not enough for you, then you must be looking for something extraordinary, which means you will have to do your own homework.

Since you want the animal to eat the proper balanced diet, offering lots of edibles to forage on means getting a gut-ful of non-nutritional plant-matter. In addition, what's not toxic may not be so safe if consumed in large quantities, and when an iguana is hooked on something, it will engorge itself on that food item.

Good luck with your search, I'd stick to fake plants if I were you, and if there is anything else you need, let us know.

p.s. I was just busting your chops when I called you a sm@rt@$$.

I read that post before I posted, but I was looking for not just a few edible plants, but as many as possible and which parts are edible.

AdeliaGrey Jul 12, 2006 10:56 AM

Did you check out the link?

matt_fl Jul 12, 2006 06:40 PM

I saw that link. Unfortunately, all of the sites for no-toxic plants listed on that site either do not say whether the plants are safe for iguanas, are not reputable enough for me to feed my iggs what they say are non-toxic, or don't specify wht parts of the plant are edible.
thanx though
