Is poor appetite on 1st molt normal?

krkaye Jul 11, 2006 08:11 PM

I have a mali uromastyx that is going through his/her first molt. She normally has a good appetite; but all of a sudden, she's barely eaten in a few days. Today, the skin on her back is hanging off and she's running around trying to get it off. She's shed her front feet's skin too. I read a previous post about shedding and i'm concerned now about her getting dehydrated. She left most of her food in her dish this morning except the corn. Is this normal behaviour for molting? She hasn't been keen on eating any greens these days either. I put kale, or bok choy or romain in there w/ peas, corn, lima beans, carrots, green beans, strawberries (all cut, ofcourse). On good days she eats all but the greens. Also, in observing her droppings, all are normal but I am finding little chunks of what looks like the vitamin powder I sprinkle on her food 2-3 times per week....as if she's passing it! Any suggestions??

I wouldn't worry too much - it actually sounds like a pretty good shed if it's shedding so much at once. Mine sometimes have a decreased appetite when shedding and it's not a problem.

The white in the feces - is it little clumps of chalky white? This is normal. It's the urates which are normally expelled at the same time.

Thanks for the info! Glad to know that about the white droppings. Yes, they're chalky white. The rest of her stools look normal. She's got pretty yellow/beige new skin on her back now; but it looks like her head and tail are next. Will he/she begin to look more like her adult colors now? I assumed she'd be female from what I've read and observed on her underside--but I'm no pro at any of this.
