Underrated kings

crimsonking Jul 11, 2006 08:35 PM

In my opinion, these prairie kings are an underrated species in the hobby.

I mean, for a calm, easy to care for and (most times) quite pretty snake, they are even good for a "beginner" snake.
These two are a day old and have not shed. Generally the normal will develop a golden ground color with maroon saddles. Very subtle good looks to me. My amels turn more cream w/cherry red saddles as they age.
Funny thing, like my Ruthven's kings, my adults did not give me amel babies for years. I think it was maybe the third year I bred their parents that I got any amels. Even now, this year, only 1 (out of 6) was an amel.

That's a really nice photograph. Very well composed, and the snakes are just darling.

I must confessed - I've never considered keeping a prarie king.
I might rethink that - though I'm not taking in any more snakes for awhile, probably not until next year (unless I catch or find a good deal on a large female cali king that tickles my fancy).

Great shot of some nice snakes. Can't wait to see them after they shed. Tom Stevens

Interesting. I don't see them offered much in shops or @ shows out here in SoCal. How big do they top out at?

Rarely near 5', I think the norm would be less than 4'. My breeders are around 36"-40" I'd say.
Most neonates start right off agressively feeding on pink mice.

I totally agree with you. We have an albino and have had a wild caught as well. They are wonderful animals to work with. Great pets.
