Leucs, Azureus, or Tincs?

MissMiniZoo Jul 12, 2006 05:53 PM

As a beginner, which of these would be a good choice? I'm still undecided if I will get any at all...but want to research as much as possible if I do decide to get a pair. Right now, I know I can provide the correct humidity levels since I created a 10 gallon with a waterfall, creek, and pond which has 85% and higher humidity levels. Please see the picture below of my tank which now houses 2 Fowler's toads. (They won't be kept in the tank long as it isn't ideal for them)

Would this tank be suitable for any of the above dart frogs? Temps are at 78-80 degrees

Thanks

They are all great frogs, so get what appeals to you the most.

This is just a subjective observation, but in spite of the fact that the general recommendation is 5 gallons per frog, with the larger species you are listing, I think a 20 gallon at least, for a pair would be better, and you would be able to add more plants, such as bromes on the walls, perhaps climbing vines and at least one relatively broad-leaved strong plant that will hold the weight of the frogs. The Azureus in particular will lay their eggs on a leaf that supports them. They are the largest of any darts I've had experience with. Some people regard them as a morph of tinctorius, and not a separate specie.

If you do use this 10 gallon, which is very nice and well planned, by the way, you should consider adding a couple more plants, something more on the background for cover. All of the species you mentioned will utilize the entire tank from top to bottom. The words "terrestrial" and "arboreal" are relative when you are keeping them in a fraction of their normal territorial habitat.

My leucs in particular, enjoy sitting in water-filled bromeliad axils.
