Would like help in identifying

crazyforcritters Jul 12, 2006 08:35 PM

Kids and I have found a salamander today. We are visiting West Virgina if that helps with the identfying. Would do pics but im not sure how to post them here.

Anyway, it was found basking on the deck of where we are staying have seen it several times in the last few days. It is a basic black color with stripes, its body appears to have yellow/greenish strips while the tails stripes appear to be blue.

We love all critters and learning more about them, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

That is not a salamandes - it is a lizard. salamanders don't bask in the sun as it would likely dehyrate and kill them. By the description it is most likely a juvenile 5-line skink or juvenile broadhead skink.

Ah see Iguana's I know, other lizards nope lol.

Does the 5 lined Skinks actually have to have five lines on them? Ive done some looking at pictures and it looks like those but its only had three lines on its top and it went down to two lines on its tail (two on tail were the blue ones).

you are probaly looking at a five lined skink, it could be a juvenile, they have very blue tails, but the link below should show you some good pics.
