Have you ever....?

Built a cage set up out of an entertainment center? I have a center that is 6'x5x about 2'. I bought the Mark Chapple book on how to build reptile enclosures for some ideas about how close this thing up. While i was reading i realized that there is going to be a lot of work ahead of me, but in the end it will all be worth it. I have figured out the lighting situation and have a rough idea of how i plan on dealing with heating. the main concern i have is with water proofing and reducing the cost of glass/plexiglass. can anyone think of any things that i have overlooked, or stories or pictures from centers that you have made.

I have talked a few people through it and have done something like it myself.

I would seal it with graphic vinyl film unless this is for a scratching species.

Regarding glass, just shop around for the cheapest price. I have always found it to vary quite a bit.

Since i am currently "held hostage" for the summer at my grandparents i have been doing a lot more reading on this forum. it has answered a lot of questions, but when one is answered two more come to mind. Back a couple of weeks ago you had discussed your thoughts on heating. for the currnet set ups i have all i have needed are lights for heating, now that im moving into a larger more complex enclosure im not sure that this is still the case. you mentioned using rhp's i am unclear about what those are and how they are used. however from what i think i got out of what was said that could be the solution to my heating problem. i wish that i could attach a picture but one i do not know how and two im not at my house.

RHP's are usually mounted on the ceiling of a cage, occasionally on an upper wall. They do not need to be protected from the animal.

They are good heat sources for many species. Not necessarily the best for species that need basking temperatures in excess of 100*.
