BTS Shyness....

Deke Aug 02, 2003 12:48 PM

I've had my Irian Jaya for around 6 months now, and she's great. However, she does seem a little reclusive. She has plants to hide behind, hollow logs and plant pots for hiding, and the heat is the right temperature. Anyone have any ideas as to why she hides away so much. The enclosure is away from everyone else, so she is rarely disturbed. Any suggestions would be great!

Hey Deke,

Is this your first BTS? Remember, this ia a fossorial species. Burrowing and hiding is natural for them. If she is doing this MORE than the norm, She may be disturbed about something. You may have to resort to experimentation with various things in your enclosure to find out.

Good luck and let us know the outcome if this is an abnormal situation.

Sincerely,
Brian

BTS by the way have a STLI of .06 Corucia zebrata have a STLI of .17. Yes, BTS love to tunnel and hide. On the STLI (Skink Trophic Level Index) the higher numbers indicate more Arboreal tendancies in their ecosystem.

If all goes well, There will be a paper published in October which will touch upon this topic, I'll keep you posted.

Sincerely,
Brian

So maybe she feels uncomfortable because the vivarium is so high up? May need to experiment with the viv at another level.
