Cage size

ballpythons18 Jul 13, 2006 06:59 AM

Hey everyone, I need some help. I am going to be building a cage for my burm. He is 34 1/2 inches right now and has had no issues with moving from a 10 gallon to a 75 gallon aquarium. He is always eating and was wondering if the cage which will be 6ft long,3ft wide and 1ft 3 in. high. About how long should this last him? I was thinking around 9-12ft. Does anyone think his size to the cage size will affect his feeding response in any way? thx for anyone's help.

Sounds like a good plan. But, if you make it just a tad larger (like 8' x 3') you will have much more floor space and not have to worry about getting a larger cage after that unless you end up having a very large adult; it might save you money in the long run. Your burm sounds well acclimated so going to a 8' cage wouldn't be a problem as long as it feels secure. Many folks stuff large burms in 6' cages but I just feel that an extra 2' is far better. We keep our adult burms in 12' x 4' x 3' (w x d x h) cages and I still feel that is too small.

thx for the reply, the prob with the 8' length is this is going on top of my steel futon bunkbed, and the bunk part is 6' by 3' and I will do another upgrade in a few years, maybe like 2

I have a 13 ft burm that is 3 years old. She is in a 6ft cage but like Rob said its kinda tight. She does have some room but I am going to move her to an 8ft cage soon. I forgot do you have a male or female? Because if it is a male it may not grow as fast. I could be wrong, depending how you feed.

I can't help you with plans but we have our cages custom built by Habitat Systems out of Iowa; they make fantastic cages and though a bit pricey, well worth the investment. Unfortunately, I don't have the knack for making things but if you do, I'm sure you'll be able to find some plans to work with.

I don't really have plans typed out per se, but would be happy to tell you how we made these if you like. Dim are 8' x 4' x 18" tall.

I love the look of the tanks ! I am about to start building my own tank, but after looking at yours I think my plans just went out the window. Would you mind telling me how you did this( types of wood to use, and the amount it cost you) The thing that has been giving me troubles in my designs is the lighting. Could you message me more details along with photos, thanks

Some things to consider for cage size.
Do you plan on moving the cage at any time in the future ?
If so then you have to consider how you will get it in and out of rooms. Most doorways are only about 6.5 ft tall and roughly 3ft wide and that makes moving an 8ft cage pretty rough .... thinking how it will go around corners, ect. Ex .. if you have a tight corner you probably cannot take it thru the door the long way and if its 8ft you cannot stand it on end to get it thru either, that leaves you with a window ... maybe.. depending on the window and where it is - apartment, 2nd floor of a house ect.
I've been planning on building my own enclosure for my Burmese and have been reading the Forum on Cage and Habitat design. There is a lot of good info there but one of the ideas that stood our for me was building sectional cages. You build 2 .. 6 ft cages and bolt them together, then when you need to move just take them apart. Also .. if your snake is small enough at this point to be ok in a 6ft cage then just make 1 and when it gets big enough build the 2nd one and put them together.

But if you never plan on moving the cage or moving from your current residence then theres no problem of course.

Just wanted to toss that idea out there for others who may need it and didnt see that in the Cage forum.

I forgot to mention about the lining for the floor. If you use this sectional idea you'd want to cover the floor and the areas where you bolt them together ( I'd make sure to cover both ends of the bolts so the snake cannot rub on the metal edges). Depending on if you use a framework or different design to make the cages will dictate how you cover the floor, theres lots of good ideas for that in the Cage and Hab forum.

Good Luck
