A quick question "housing"

jasonw Jul 13, 2006 10:42 AM

Hi. I am not new to Iguanas but have not maintained them in years. Right now I have a fairly small one "about 12" total length" He is sitting cozy in a small cage but not to small. The last one I had ran free in my office years ago and did great in there. My plan was to allow this same wandering now. There should be no problems with this correct? We keep a very clean house and were afraid of an Iguana running round and mistakenly getting stepped on or something but we did not release him to run free until he was about 3 feet long and well a 3 foot green Iguana in a tidy office sticks out like a sore thumb and we never ran into any problems. Also it is a private office so I would not have to worry about other not knowing it was there.

Hello,

Free Roaming can be good. But how are you planning to set up the UVB lighting. What will you do about temps and humidity? Just curious.

To be honest I have no clue. As I said I have done this before and never ran into a problem with any of that. The Iguana would sit on my desk in the afternoon and soak up some sun as it came in the window. The biggest problem I had was he used the whole office as a litter box.

I'd just build an enclosure with an opening so that the animal can bask/poop in there, and come out to roam. To use the office as a litter box is... well... disgusting, and enforces the "poop all over" behavior in the house as well.

Sun from a window heats the animal, but no UV exposure.
Check out Hatfield's setup in his book. He shows a picture of his office, you might find it interesting.

Windows will block UVB unless you have special glass. Screening can filter up to 50% of the UVB.

Your iguana will die at a young age if it doesn't get UVB instead of living into their 20s. UVB is needed for digestion of calcium. Without it no amount of calcium will matter.

My ig goes in the same area every day. At first when I put anything down he would then go elsewhere. He's gotten used to it now though and has gone back to that favorite place. Now I just have a thick piece of plastic about 1' x 5' and he goes on there. I just have to carry it to the bathtub to wash it out.
