Enlarged Postanal Scales??

mrand Jul 13, 2006 01:24 PM

hey folks,

I don't own a dragon, but i'm trying to gather info for a potential research project. Do bearded dragon males possess enlarged postanal scales? do any of you know whether other agamid species exhibit this sexual dimorphism?

any info would be greatly appreciated (mrand@carleton.edu)

If what your talking about is the pores on the undersides of the back legs, then yes adult male pre anal pores appear larger then females. Males will secrete a waxy hormonal substance from these pores thus they appear larger or swollen in mature males. While this can be used as a sexing method for older mature adults (If you have something to compare too) it is trickier to distinguish this size diference in younger juveniles.

I'm not sure of other species of agamids as I only work with bds, but I know ingunas, and many geckos posses these pores as well.
