Laying Boxes

timbo08 Jul 13, 2006 07:19 PM

My female panther chameleon mated about 3 weeks ago. I have to potted plants in her cage and today i saw her digging in one. I left her alone for about 4 hours and came back in and she was at the top of her basking spot. The hole she dug was left uncovered. Im guess she didnt lay as she left the hole uncovered. I will check later tonight and make sure. I also just put togather a trash can with a plant in it and a bunch of soil for her. If i find no eggs tonight im going to put her in the can tommorow. Any help or hints would be great.

thanks

Iv'e always used large garbage cans with great success. Use at least 18" of substrate. Keep the humidity up, and make sure that even the deeper areas of the substrate are moistened enough that it will not give way when tunnelling.

Good luck.

Panther chameleons can dig several different holes or the same hole for more than one day. Its very normal. However, if she sees you watching her when she is digging it might cause her to abandon the hole thinking that its an unsafe place to lay the eggs. If this happens too often, she could become eggbound and die....so don't let her see you.

Moving her to the trash can would be fine..just don't disturb/move her too much. She knows what to do and should do it...including burying her eggs and packing the soil down over the hole. She should then return to her branches. Once mine return to the branches I dig the eggs up.

You can spray the plant and the sides of the trash can while she is in there and even feed her if she is there for more than a couple of days. Just be sure not to leave any uneaten insects in there because they can nibble on her while she is laying the eggs or nibble on the eggs.

Good luck with her and the eggs!

Thanks eveyone, she laid 30 eggs and is doing great. I got her out in the sun to make up for her calcium loss. The trash can method worked great and i reccomend that to anyone who has a female who needs to lay..
