Winter Diet

theredneckgal Aug 02, 2003 01:45 PM

Ok I have a question as far as winter diets? Do Uro's eat less? And do I need to change his diet all? This will be our first winter with our Mali and I just want to make sure we are doing it right. As of right now Drake eats dandilions (a few a week) bok choy, collard greens, dried beans, and the occasional carrots and peas and 2 worms a week. He will not eat mustard greens or napa chabbage and he loves kale but we stopped giving it to him once we realized he is not supposed to have it all the time. I am going to try the cactus this week but I have not had time to burn the spines off yet and get it all ready for him! Other ideas as far as his diet goes would be great. Thanks in advance for the help!

From what i know, you don't HAVE to change their diet much, unless you are getting them ready to breed and such, then you cut their food, or just stop for a bit. You can read that on doug dix's deerfernfarms.com page under the breeding section. Other than that i do not think you have to change much, other than cutting down the lighting and heat. But even that is not totally nessecary from what i know.
Good luck

Thanks for the help once again! I knew you had to change thier diet for breeding and that happens in the winter It was just confusing to me if you weren't going to breed if you needed to change thier diet. Asfor heat and light I plan to follow the natural light patterns and ajust them once a month to match if needed. But the heat stays the same correct????? I know I should know this!

yes the heat itself stays the same, the cutting in lighting/heat bulb, is what i ment sorry. I believe you cut down to 10 hours minimum...
Sounds like your doing great!
