chacoantegu Aug 02, 2003 02:01 PM

it is definetly way to hot and sunny for my 2 1/2 month jackson outside right now so i put him in the shade under an umbrella on my patio and he seems to like the breezes and stuff but is he still getting uvb from being in the shade

If he is outside, I wouldnt worry about it. About two hours in direct sunlight is worth 12 hours with the best UV flourescent, if Im remembering my figures correctly. Plus, the UV light probably diffuses just as well as other wavelengths, which means while he isnt getting the DIRECT light, he is probably getting some. Just as long as the light hasnt passed through glass, it should still keep the UV spectrum.

Hi-

I house all my panthers outside during the summer here in SoCal. I use a shade cloth (75% block) over 1/2 the top of the cages. My setup is set so that all the cages have a sunny spot and a shaded spot in the cage during the day. So as long as the umbrella you are using allows some light to shine through, or through the sides of it you are fine. Natural unfiltered sunlight is the best thing you can give your chameleon. On hot days make sure to maintain humidity and ALWAYS provide water, I use an automatic misting system indoors and outdoors. You can make a cheep auto mister for outdoors with a water timer , some tube and a misting port for less them $50. Hope this helps.

thanks for the help. I was just wondering if you keep your panthers outside at night and do you think that a 2 1/2 month and four month old jackson would be fine staying outside at night or are they still too fragile? Also where do you get the shade cloths from? I would also like to thank you for your great website especially the cage building instructions they worked out great for me and they were easy to adjust to fit my needs. Instead of it being 4' tall i made it 3' and i used 1/4" cloth since it is being used indoors. It been working really out really great and saved me lots of money, it only cost about forty dollars.

Hi-

I keep a close eye on the night temps. As long as the temp is above 60F at night they are housed outside 24/7. I got the shade cloth at homedepot in the outdoor garden section. I think the young Jax would be better off indoors at night until they are about 6 months and have built up a strong immune system. I am glad the cage instructions worked out good for you.
