WRIC (Richmond, Virginia) 13 July 06 Father & Son Bitten By Copperhead In Their Home
A Hanover father and son are in the hospital after both were bitten by a copperhead snake in their home.
Family members say the son, 15-year-old Clay Reed is in stable condition at VCU Medical Center. He's being held for observation, but family members say his father, 45-year-old Mike Reed is in intensive care, suffering from complications.
Family members tell us just before 6:30 this morning Mike Reed was coming down the stairs to start his day when a copperhead bit him at the bottom of the stairs. They say Mike managed to call 9-1-1 before falling unconscious and then a few minutes later, when his son Clay came down, he was bitten too.
"It appeared to be a juvenile copperhead based upon what we was looking at," says Officer Allan Smith of Hanover Animal Control.
Smith arrived on the scene shortly after ambulances rushed the father and son to the hospital.
He says he found the 8-10 inch snake in the middle of the living room, and per policy, he caught it, and killed it.
"We had to kill the snake basically and we packaged it up and sent it with the deputy who carried it to MCV for the doctors to examine it," Smith said.
Family members tell us they're not sure how the copperhead got into the house.
