snake rooms

Long time reader, second time poster. Just curious where you guys keep your snakes. I'm from down here in Florida and I have about 12 snakes right now that I keep in the house. It is a dream of mine to breed some of my snakes and accumulate many more(like a couple speckled kings from East Coast Colubrids and a couple New Englands from Rainer),however I know I will eventually need to move everything outside. In hot climates do any of you guys keep your snakes in something like a Teds Shed? I just looked at these and it looks like they would just need insulating and a window ac unit. Any thoughts? Pictures? Thanks. Kevin

Kevin,I live in FT Pierce Fl.After the hurricanes messed up my snake and rodent buldings,I bought a 12X20 building from the shed man out of Ocala.they are very well built,I insulated it with a foil and air bubble insulation.I devided the building in half,in the front side I have my mice breeding racks and racks for hatchling snales. In the back room I have my racks with 28 qt tubs and I have room for about 100 adults,I have a small ac unit on each side.I keep the temps aronnd 78 degrees, and when I brumate the adults I can low the temp down to 60 degrees and they do very well,as you know sometimes we have 80 degrees in December, hope this helps, give me your email address and I can take some pictures ans forward to you,Terry M

Is that an air conditioning unit above the door? kevin

yes it is ,it is very hot here in Fla.can only work out there (building and insulating)till about 11:00 am then that tin roof is like a "coals over"(China box) Pig cooker.
i have fiberglas insulation in the walls and 2" styro foam under the tin roof"almost done!" i may still put a shade over itBTW the A/C unit is for me when im working out there

I'm in Fort Myers and a few minutes ago was looking out the door to my back porch wondering what it'd cost to put in windows and make a sun room out of it. We have 18 snakes in the house (all in separate enclosures) and would love to have a snake room.

I keep my collection in a spare bedroom of our house.I close off the central A.C. vents in the summer, and use a small elecrtic heater in the winter. My basement also makes a great hibernaculum for my breeders in the winter. It stays 55-58 degrees.

I just wanted to share with you all a few pictures of the racks I am currently using. I work with nearly 15 different North and Latin American triangulum and locality L.alterna. I have nearly 175 snakes housed in these racks and although they have served their purpose well for many years, my plan is to eventually go with plastic racks in the near future.
My wife and I just built a new home, moving in only weeks ago. This particular room is heated with daytime highs in the low 80's and allowed to drop a little at night, into the high 70's. Although we don't experience much of a winter being here in east Texas, I am still able to control hibernating temperatures fairly well using the air conditioner. Thanks for looking..

How do you keep the shaving off the carpet? Amazingly clean!

I love those racks. They look like they could withstand one of our hurricanes. Kevin
