what to put in tank?

otis07 Jul 14, 2006 06:13 PM

i have a ten gallon hex. tank and i don't know what to put in it. i have allready got like a dozen plants (broms, air plants, ferns, vines...) and put in a false bottom and waterfall. i'm making a corcbark and great stuff background. i originally made it for mantallas, but can't seem to find anywhere to get them and i'm not getting them shipped. any ideas what to put in it? i was thinking clown treefrogs, but still don't really know. can any lizards go in there- was thinking a small day gecko, but i don't want something that needs UVB. any advice would be greatly appriciated, thanks.

You could see if any reptile shows coming in your area this summer. I have seen them in shows for sale but either way you could get those small house geckos pet stores sell .
They dont need special light they are night geckos. Spring peepers are tiny frogs those a real hardy sold in pet stores to.

You were thinking of Day geckos which many confuse with house geckos. Days get much bigger .

Your set up is great they eat tiny insects tiny crickets fruit flies, etc. This is a chat some had about them you can see they are easy and active at night.

There are diffeent types of house geckos the cheap feeder types pet stores sell stay the smallest . Most are drabbish grey but you can find very very light colored whiteish types to which are neat. They drink water when you mist the plants they wont drink from a bowl.

In your tank I would keep a female and a male you will get eggs. I dont know how to sex them but know a pair in your type set up will breed . They hide during day under your plants out all night .
I dont know how much money you want to spend but there is always the dwarf tiny brookesia chamaleons which for your tank are great even reed treefrogs but I imagine not easy to find unless you go to reptile shows while house geckos you find in any pet store.
However house geckos are great and active at night nice to watch and hardy.

no, i know what both species are- i have a day gecko (grandis) and really like them, but the UVB stuff is expensive. plus i have a glass top so don't really know how that would work.

i allready thought about the cham, but it seems that all the ones available are wild caught and i don't want a WC animal- well i do kinda but would feel so bad. plus their mortality rate is extremely high in cptivity, i think the longest anybody's had them for is like 2 years, mostly less than 8 months.

that would be awsome if they layed eggs, i'm a kid and never had anything breed, that would be fun! i'm going to a herp show in like 3 weeks and i'll look there.

thanks for all your help!
