Frozen cold pack placed directly in tank

Bianca Jul 15, 2006 03:49 AM

Hi
Anyone ever place one of those frozen cold packs in their snakes cage during hot weather?
I use AC but only when home . Temps average 80 to 85 when not home . In his enclosure no cool spot .
Doesnt bother my corn at all infact likes it my other king likes it but my thayeri will go under water bowl and leave his favorite hide area . I can tell bit to warm.
His tank is big enough lots room so was thinking of just placing a frozen cold pack against one of his hide areas but not sure if this is dangerous (pack cant break but not sure if contact with frozen pack might be bad ) ?
Any input would be great . He has been eating like a pig and seems happy but I am sure bit to hot for him during day .
At night with the AC on and his UTH on he enjoys "patrolling" and "smiles" more.

thanks

Temps of 80-85 aren't excessive for the short period of time each day that you are concerned about, and your male thayeri is a clever one. He has found his own source of AC under his water bowl, so there is in fact a cool spot for him to use during the heat of the day. As any liquid evaporates, it absorbs heat as it converts into a vapor form. This is the basic principle of refrigeration and what is happening with that water bowl is similar to what happens on the surface of your skin when your body needs to cool itself. His water bowl is being cooled by the evaporation of the water in it and he has found himself a nice cool spot under the bowl.

I wouldn’t worry about him much, it sounds like he is doing fine. If you still want to try cooling his favorite hide with a cold pack you might want to wrap it in a cloth to keep it cool a little longer and provide a safe barrier between the frozen surface and the snake.

Yeah... mine does the exact same thing here in SoCal. It's no big deal except he spills his water when doing it... messy.
How long do the cold-packs stay cold? Do you really want to be switching one out every day?
