what should/shouldn't have in baby tank?

lele Jul 15, 2006 01:50 PM

My week old blotchie is not eatng as far as I can tell. The roaches hide and if I put them in a bowl he does not go in after them. I also have ff but am running low (just started a new culture). I have several roach egg cases from my Turkistan roaches. The babies are really tiny (much smaller than discoid and other common roaches)so when they "hatch" they should be a perfect size, but not sure the best place to put this. Think of setting it on some moist coco-fiber in a little dish.

I have no substrate (don't in adult tank either, except for burrowing/sleeping sand) nor his sand yet. Thinking maybe I can put a small container of sand in so he at least has that option at night. I only have a few rocks b/c I don't want the roaches to have too many places to hide. I am not new to herps at all but sure new to this baby thing!

His basking is temp is 90, as suggested by Alice in previous thread. He is in a 2.5 but will be moving his folks to a 20 gal and will move him into the 10 gal.

Any pics or other tips? I cannot find pinhead crix locally and the least I can order online is 250. I'd rather stick with what I have since I am trying to do away with crickets as staple for everyone.

thanks again!
lele

hmmmm - he might be a she!

When I had anole, house gecko, alligator lizard hatchlings etc, I'd take a butterfly net and sweep the grass in our yard. I'd come up with tons of little flies and leaf hoppers. I'd pull out anything too large, or that didn't look like suitable prey and dump the rest in. I'm not sure if something like this would be feasable for you, but it worked great for me. In terms of the pin head crickets, I order the 250 regularly and just set them up in a critter keeper with fish food and orange slices. I feed the little ones to my slender salamanders and the guys that don't get fed out, grow up and get fed to my larger lizards. But, I don't see why the crickets would be anymore appealing than the roaches. Doing the sweeps of the yard is nice because most of the insects you catch are diurnal so they'll stay out running around during the day rather than seeking cover like the crickets and roaches.

And they are available from several online sources as well. And, FlukerFarms.com sells a "tube of 50 crickets" for $5, which includes shipping. You can order whatever size you want in that tube. They usually put in way more than 50 new-hatched crickets, who's gonna sit there and count out 1/8" crickets? These make ideal baby food for lizardbabies.

thanks, esther. I know about PetCo just don't have one too close so I raise my own, wasn't paying attention how low they were getting. I found a 1/2" inchworm and he grabbed it (his mom loves wormy things, too) and he seems afraid of the roaches! I'm going to order some phoenix worms. I don't use them often but for him they should be great.

I did not know about fluker's tube - will check it out - thanks!

I placed a small plant try of sand for him and as far as I can tell that is where he went to sleep.
