Perenties ? Just curious

VaranusAqua Jul 15, 2006 04:58 PM

Has there been any succesful breeding/importing of perenties? Never heard or seen of any but they have to be the very coolest looking monitor in my opinion. Are they endangered or something?

I agree! I think they are one of the most incredible looking monitors. As far as I know, Frank has the only perentie in the US but they might rarely be available for a very high price from other countries! Im not sure they are endangered, but its very hard to get one because of Australias strict exportation laws. If anyone knows of them being captive bred, it would be great to find out...

Frank has a little bit of everything doesn't he? Does he have a breeder site? I've been to the goanna ranch site and its under construction-and in another monitor forum i saw a post about perenties being up to $12,000. I dunno how much truth is behind it though.

Yeah, he definately seems to have a little bit of everything! I think he has a female giganteus but has been unable to find a male.
I don't know of any site that he has. The one thats "under constuction" appears to be inactive. I remember seeing one on an australian site selling them in australia for about 5,000 or something, so to aquire one outside of australia would probably be much much higher than 12. And if there was indeed one, Im sure either some sort of zoo or frank would get it before any of us.
Of course, Frank would be the best one to clear up most of these questions, including his website.
Oh yeah, and Frank(if you read this), I tried to send you an email about possibly coming to your ranch, but never heard anything back. I want to see your perentie and happy monitors! Did you get it?

Yeah i found a pic on a site of his perentie its a female as the site stated... and a gorgeous one at that.

I'm positive I saw a perentie at the Brookfield zoo in Chicago about 5 years back. Just one though, no breeding or anything like that.

no way... im going there this weekend to see no ifs and or buts

I saw on the "Crocodile Hunter" where Australia Zoo sent a pair of parenties off to a zoo in Texas for a captive breeding program.

Available you could count in the last 10 years on one hand in classifieds.
Ive heard of 6 for sale in the US in 14 years plus. I found out about 4 of them after they were sold or transferred hands, 2 were sold on these classifieds around a year ago.
CBB Perenties are just not commonly available, in fact very rarely available, and WC are all property of the Government of Australia, there are no exports period, only to zoos that have been approved.
It would be easier to move to Australia and get one rather than wait for one outside the country.
The prices Ive seen on the few Ive heard prices from were all $12,000 to $26,000 each in North America or Europe.
I dont think FR has any interest in trying to obtain an animal that causes problems with USFWS and other governing bodies with its actual or possible legality, and that you may be out alot of money and/or the animal may spend too much time in someones care that has no reason to be caring for one, or in limbo trying to go where they decide to send it next.
