I'll be in Del Mar next weekend any help/ directions to a area to see/photo critters. I've never herped Southern Calif. before.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you want to see, and how you would like to herp. A good start would be to head out to Anza Borrego. Plenty of day and night time oppotunities. If you're looking for diurnal snakes or lizards, start hiking around 7:00am. (it's been very hot here lately, activity comes to a screeching hault at about noon, then picks back up again after 5:00pm or so) For nocturnal animals, there are tons of roads to cruise in the area. Buy yourself a Southern Ca. State highway map and just pick a road that looks like it runs through desert habitat.

If it cools off a bit, it should be real good with the new moon coming on Monday...
We're planning on heading out this week/weekend, so if schedules work out, I'd be happy to take you along with us.
Shoot me an email, and we can try to hook up.
