Arizona vs. Utah mountain King ?

gross_sf Jul 16, 2006 12:19 AM

Hi all,

I was wondering, could anyone tell me the difference between an Arizona Mountain King (Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana) and an Utah Mountain king (Lampropeltis pyromelana infralabialis)?

They both look rather similiar to me. Even after reading their profile,I can't tell the difference. Is there any physical attributes which distinguish between these two species? I could use some help.

Thanks !!

I believe some now consider them to be the same subspecies, pyromelana. I don't know what the differences for previous distinction were.

Found this -

www.kingsnake.com/king/pyromelana/infralabialis.html

Tanner based the classification of the Utah Mountain kingsnake on the 9 lower labial scales in infralabialis compared to 10 in p. pyromelana and the 50 percent or more white rings extending unbroken across the belly (infralabialis) versus 50 percent or less of the white rings extending unbroken across the belly (p. pyromelana). Bartholomew (unpublished data) found that most but not all of the Utah specimens had the distinctive labial scale count.
