I don't know if my baby albino corn snake is about to shed!

blaino_murph Aug 02, 2003 04:52 PM

He ate on Tuesday last week and today is Saturday. SO it's been about 12 days now. At night time he's more active and some times rubs his head on things. He's not cloudy and his eyes are not cloudy blue. I've been having trouble feeding him. He is refusing to eat his pinkies.

Sometimes it is hard to tell if the red eyes on an albino turn blue. The way I tell when any of my snakes are almost ready to shed if the dullness of their normally bright colors. It is like you can see the old skin on top. Also they will rub their noses and heads on things to try to get that old skin off. (I imagine it is kind of itchy.) If you want to you can help the shed along by soaking him in warm (not hot) paper towels. I do that if any of mine seem to be having a bad shed. Just my thoughts.

If he's already rubbing on things, then his eyes would be clear. They go blue for a few days, clear up for a few more days and then they shed. So, if you missed the cloudy-eye period, they only way to tell that they will shed is by the dull appearance overall.

If you think he's having trouble getting the shed started, it may help if you make him a moist hide. Take a plastic container, cut a small hole in the lid and fill the inside with moist paper napkins...this way, he can go in, soak himself and rub on the moist napkins to loosen things up a bit.

I personally think you should not over-react to everything the snake does. Just calm down, and leave the snake alone for a while. You just got it, so you should let it get used to everything before you bother it and try to make it eat. If the snake is going to shed, then it will shed. Just take a breath and not go crazy with everything your new pet does.
