Something New? Anyone seen one of these?

PythonJoe Jul 16, 2006 11:59 PM

I purchased this male at the end of last year. He was too small to breed but should be ready by the end of this season. I haven't seen anything else quite like him. He's got a very busy pattern, almost like someone poured carmel syrup down his back and it dripped over the sides into the side saddles. Then, inbetween the side markings he has extreme blushing. There's a faded splotch on his head. His belly has light gray lines running on either side with solid white inbetween, similar to a het pied market but running the entire length of the belly and more gray than black.
Let me know if you've seen another like this and what you think of him.
Many thanks,
Python Joe

I have seen those before and from what I know they are called Harlaquins. Nice looking example of one.

Joe
I would agree appears to be some type of harlequin.
This is another very variable Morph so as they prove out I am sure there will be many different names for them.....
All genetic harlequins, (that I am aware of to date), have belly striping Thats the only market trait I know of to be sure. Perhaps some others can help or add more insight
Here are some pic of our male we got last year out of Africa...

Yes,
I acquired him from Stefan at MS Reptilien at Daytona last year. Stefan gets some neat stuff out of Africa every year. My only regret is not getting his sister also.

Joe and Michael, both of your snakes look awesome!

After doing buisness with Michael in the past, it seems like he continues to produce/aquire some of the most interesting pythons around. I am continuously impressed. Can't wait to see what you have on your table at Daytona!

I would breed him to a yellow belly. Looks a little like 1/2 a super stripe from what I have seen.

Thanks for all your terrific posts. I can see characteristics of "harlequin" but the trait seems so variable it's sometimes difficult to tell what is and what isn't a harlequin.

I heard that someone proved the trait to be dominant (not yet proven co-dom) but the photos I saw looked more like "non-genetic" striped vs "harlequin." Has anyone really proved this out? More information about if this should be a dom/co-dom trait, simple recessive, etc. and pics of parents with babies would be really cool to see.

Here's a shot of his belly.

mlpetros Jul 18, 2006 07:37 AM

Pretty cool looking ball you`ve got there. Hope there`s some interesting genetics in him, I`d breed him to a yellow belly...could hatch out something really cool. Good luck Joe. Best wishes, Mark BallPython777.com
