Humidity Questions..Please Help

johnbort2 Jul 17, 2006 08:00 AM

Hello all. I just recently acquired 2 BCI that are 1.5 months old. I currently have them housed in a rack system with iris boxes. These are the shoebox size boxes. My question is concerning humidity, initially I used cypress mulch as a substrate. This had the humidity at 95%, which is too high..right? I removed that and added newspaper, so there is newspaper, large bowl of water and a hide. Humidity is still at 85%. What is the healthy upper limit of humidity? I forgot to mention, I have holes all around the containers..usually 3 holes on each side make with soldering iron. Any suggestions? The next step up in enclosures I have are much more stable, but too big for these lil ones to feel secure(3' cages)

Thanks,
John

Hello John, The size boxes you are using are great if you use aspen or just white paper towels on bottom....use a small deli cup for water....they will outgrow that box fast and if you move up to the mid-size box they can be in that for alot longer time. You need more holes in the box for air-flow and cypress is just too much for a small box with very little airflow. Even in large 4 foot cages...I use a container inside the cage filled with cypress during dry seasons...but not the whole cage...the animal needs to dry out sometimes too. Hope this helps. Thanks for the reply. I will also put smaller water bowls in there. The ones in there now are about 4" in diameter...probably way to large.
